Reliance Industries is gearing up to invest around $13 billion in energy projects, with an aim to boost heavy crude oil refining process in India and beat China and Middle East’s oil production capacity.The company’s Jamnagar Berhampur Refinery in Gujarat, which is also set to be included in this investment, has a capacity of refining 4 lakh barrels of crude oil per day (bpd), according to Reuters.As per the company’s plan, the new refinery will use five single point moorings, two for product shipments and three for crude oil import.”The new refinery will increase Reliance’s appetite for cheap opportunity grades and offer more dollars per barrel of oil processed,” Praveen Kumar at Singapore-based consultancy FACTS Global Energy told the news agency.While the company has not yet declared the details of project, analysts opine that the new refinery is expected to be constructed by the end of 2020.Reliance operates the world’s biggest refining complex in Jamnagar, where its two adjoining units can refine around 1.4 million bpd of oil.In 2013, the company received a nod from the environment ministry to invest ₹773 billion ($12.8 billion) to expand its new refinery and polymer units. The company was allowed to switch the energy capacity for a 450 megawatt.According to documents acquired by Reuters, the environment ministry in its letter to Reliance in May asked to meet certain conditions in order to receive approval for the projects. However, the process was delayed as the documents did not mention a specific date of approval. A Cuban state airways plane with 110 passengers and crew on board crashed shortly after taking off from Havana on Friday, leaving a mass of twisted and smouldering fuselage, as the country’s president warned many people were feared dead.Cuban state media reported that three women had been pulled alive from the mangled wreckage and were in critical condition in hospital.There was no other official mention of survivors from the nearly 40-year-old Boeing 737, operated by Cubana de Aviacion. It crashed into a field close to a wooded area near Jose Marti airport, sending a thick column of acrid smoke into the air.The 110 people aboard included six Mexican crew, said the Mexico-based company that leased the plane, Global Air, also known as Aerolineas Damojh.Two victims were Argentine, the country’s foreign ministry said. Most of the others were Cuban, according to state media.The plane—carrying 104 passengers—was almost completely destroyed in the crash and subsequent fire. Firefighters raced to the scene along with a fleet of ambulances to put out the blaze.Emergency personnel combed through the wreckage, lending little hope that there could be other survivors.What appeared to be one of the wings of the plane was wedged among scorched tree trunks, but the main fuselage was almost entirely destroyed.Cuba’s president Miguel Diaz-Canel, who visited the scene, told AFP authorities feared the worst.“The news is not very promising—it seems that there is a high number of victims,” Diaz-Canel said.The 58-year-old president, who succeeded Raul Castro as the communist island’s leader only last month, appeared aghast as he surveyed the recovery efforts, wearing a short-sleeved green shirt and surrounded by officials.He said an investigation into the cause of the accident was underway.Cuba declared two days of national mourning.Raul Castro sent condolences to families of the victims of the “catastrophic accident,” a statement read, as Russian president Vladimir Putin and a string of Latin American leaders also expressed sympathy.‘The explosion shook everything’Airport sources said the plane took off at 12:08 pm (1608 GMT) heading for the eastern city of Holguin, 670 kilometres (415 miles) away.From the supermarket where he works near the airport, Jose Luis, 49, said he could see the plane taking off before it banked and plunged to the ground.“I saw it taking off. All of a sudden, it made a turn, and went down. We were all amazed,” he said.Yasniel Diaz, a 21-year-old musician, said the pilot appeared to attempt an emergency landing, but crashed instead.“The explosion shook everything,” he said.“I started running, I was so afraid.”Images from Cuban television showed rescue workers at the scene removing what appeared to be a survivor on a stretcher as rain began to fall.Anguished relativesGlobal Air said the plane was flying with a crew of six Mexicans—the pilot, co-pilot, three flight attendants and a maintenance technician.In Mexico City, anguished relatives and colleagues of the crew gathered outside the company’s offices demanding information—some of them hugging and crying.“I was friends with the captain, with the co-pilot, with the head flight attendant,” said a former Global Air employee, 44-year-old Ana Marlene Covarrubias.“When I heard the news on the phone, I thought it was one of those jokes people play,” she told AFP.Mexico said it had sent two civil aviation specialists to help in the investigation.The Mexican communications and transportation ministry said the plane was built in 1979. Global Air had the necessary permits to lease it, and had passed inspections in November last year, it said.The company, formed in 1990, had a fleet of three planes, all Boeing 737s.Prior to Friday’s crash, Cuba’s most recent air accident occurred in April 2017, when eight military personnel died when a Russian-made AN-26 transport aircraft went down in western Cuba.The country’s last major airline disaster was in November 2010 when a Cuban Aerocaribbean jet crashed on a flight from Santiago de Cuba to Havana, killing all 68 people on board, including 28 foreigners.

Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Italian astronomers have conducted an X-ray analysis of the accreting supermassive black hole in the broad line radio galaxy PKS 2251+11 as part of a study aimed at investigating the galaxy’s nuclear environment. The new research, presented in a paper published March 15 on arXiv.org, could improve the understanding of active galactic nuclei. Radio galaxies, which have active galactic nuclei (AGN), emit huge levels of radio waves from their central cores. Black holes at the center of these galaxies are accreting gas and dust, generating high-energy jets visible in radio wavelengths, which accelerate electrically charged particles to high velocities. In AGNs, the accreting material is reprocessed by the surrounding nuclear environment, so that these objects are observable at all wavelengths, from radio to gamma-rays. However, the structure of the nuclear environment still baffles scientists, and more studies, especially in the X-ray wavelength, are required in order resolve any uncertainties regarding this subject. Such observations could be a powerful tool for the investigation of the accretion-ejection physics in the neighborhood of supermassive black holes in AGNs.Broad-line radio galaxies (BLRGs), like PKS 2251+11 at a redshift of approximately 0.33, are excellent targets for high-quality X-ray observations due to the fact that they have the highest X-ray fluxes in the radio-loud population of AGNs. Therefore, high X-ray luminosity and the relative proximity of PKS 2251+11 make it an ideal candidate for a detailed analysis of the accretion regions in radio galaxies.So a group of astronomers led by Samuele Ronchini of Gran Sasso Science Institute in Italy has used ESA’s XMM-Newton space telescope to conduct spectral and timing analysis of PKS 2251+11 in the X-ray band in order to get more insight into the structure, kinematics and physical state of the nuclear environment in this galaxy.”Through the X-ray analysis of an observation performed with the XMM-Newton observatory, we have obtained novel information about the geometry, the kinematics and the physical state of the regions surrounding the accreting SMBH [supermassive black hole] at the center of the BLRG PKS 2251+11,” the astronomers wrote in the paper.The observations found that the X-ray source in PKS 2251+11 is partially covered by the ionized absorbing medium. This absorber is most likely clumpy and could be composed by distinct clouds with a covering factor of around 90 percent. The distance of the absorbing medium from the supermassive black hole was estimated to be around 0.33 light years, however, it cannot be excluded that the absorber is located much farther, in the zone of the dusty torus.The researchers also detected an iron K-alpha emission line at 6.4 keV. The intensity of this emission showcases variability on timescales of hours. The scientists added that besides this feature, no other spectral parameters exhibit significant variability during the observational campaign.In concluding remarks, the authors of the paper noted that many questions remain about PKS 2251+11, like the origin of its jet. This is mainly due to the lack of information regarding the state of the very innermost disk and the spin of the galaxy’s SMBH. However, the researchers note that the X-ray properties indicate that PKS 2251+11 does not differ significantly from the non-jetted AGNs. This document is subject to copyright. Kolkata: Six people were crushed to death and 12 injured when a truck rammed into a tea stall as the driver lost control over the vehicle in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district, police said. “A speeding truck rammed into a roadside tea shop near Kharagpur area on National Highway 6 on Thursday evening. Six people were killed in the accident,” an officer from the Kharagpur police station said.The people gathered at the shop for evening snacks.”Twelve people sustained injuries in the accident. They have been admitted to hospitals in Kharagpur and Midnapore,” he said.The truck has been seized while the driver fled the spot.
