Sania celebrates 24th birthday with hope for the future

first_imgSania Mirza decided to celebrate her 24th birthday near the tennis courts at the Aoti sports complex on Monday. For one who likes to keep the media at a distance, this was a day when Sania mixed freely with all as she cut the cake and offered it to several people. With husband Shoaib Malik flying down for the special moment, the Indian tennis star was all smiles. “My husband has come down and it also happens to be my mother’s birthday. Above all, India has won a medal in tennis and I am very happy,” Sania told Mail Today.Reflecting on the year gone by, Sania was frank in her assessment. “No doubt this has been an eventful year for me. Getting married to Shoaib was a big decision and having to spend five months at home because of injury, I thought I would quit tennis. Yes, Allah has been kind to me,” she said.Currently on antibiotics for a severe ear infection, where the Indian star says she could hear “tennis balls popping in my ears”, Sania is aware of the challenges ahead. “I had to miss the team event but I am ready for the open events now. As I can take part in only two events, I will play singles and mixed doubles with Vishnu Vardhan,” said Sania. “I have seen his game. He serves and volleys well and has a good backhand.”This was a day when Sania was ready to reflect on her first medal at the Busan Asian Games in 2002. “I was just 15 then and these eight years have gone by fast. I think the Doha Asiad was very good for me but what makes me happy today is I am still enjoying my tennis,” she said.advertisementHaving been with Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi and now being part of a contingent with youngsters, Sania feels the next generation is ready to take over. “Look at it, we don’t have Leander or Mahesh or Rohan and we still win a medal in men’s tennis. This is a superb start,” she said.Sania is pleased to see the progress of Indian sport. “We had a good run at the Commonwealth Games and we started winning medals. I wasn’t able to see Pankaj Advani’s match or Gagan Narang win silver. But I think we will keep the momentum going,” she said.On her fitness, injuries and overall life, Sania was very clear. “I am actually feeling no pain in my right wrist, which had been bothering me. I think after marriage I have got what I wanted and Shoaib is a very nice husband. Most often, I am travelling during my birthday. Tonight, it should be a quiet dinner with my family and friends,” she said. For his part, Shoaib prefers not to talk too much. “Yes I came all the way for Sania’s birthday and will be flying back on the 18th. I did play the Super Sixes in Hong Kong and I hope Sania can do well here,” he told Mail Today.last_img read more

BECK REACHES FOR THE STARS

first_imgNicole Beck was an obvious choice as captain of the NSWCHS women’s team. A couple of months ago Beck got the call up to the National Women’s Open Squad and watching her play here at this tournament, it is not hard to see why. Getting the call up was something which she had dreamed of, and was not expecting it at all. Beck thought she hadn’t made the squad after missing out the initial on selection. “I was heaps shocked, but heaps happy too,” said Beck. Her talent shines here at this tournament, with skills that others are only just aiming to accomplish. But she believes that it is her commitment and determination in wanting to win that is her best attribute. “It’s my competitiveness, I hate to lose,” Beck said.Although Beck is not currently a part of the Australian Team to compete in the World Cup in South Africa next year, she is aiming to be a part of the following World Cup and will continue to strive for that goal. “I am just looking to keep learning and improving and hopefully in the future make the team,” Beck said. Beck’s message for the 750 athletes competing here this week who are looking to further their Touch career, is “keep going, set your goals high and keep your head up.”“I live by the motto: shoot for the moon because even if you miss at least you’ll land among the stars.”Influencing Beck’s Touch style is playing with and learning from players like Rachel Holden, and coaches like Tracey Bills. “I have been coached by Tracey Bills for about seven years and I have learnt a lot from her, actually almost everything,” Beck said.Beck’s NSWCHS team is now into the grand final against QSST and is hoping to repeat last year’s efforts, taking the title of under 18’s National Champions.last_img read more

He’d provide the attacking threat a good centre-forward should provide and he’s a proven goalscorer through the age groups with Chelsea and England.“If he comes here, it will be a great opportunity to show he can transfer that to Premier League football because we have someone who is the profile we are looking for and who I think has the ability we are looking for.”Another club allegedly interested in the England U-21 international is Huddersfield Town.last_img read more
