A novel project: Literature, engineering collide in middle school outreach

first_imgThe Harvard Ed Portal in Allston was buzzing with the excitement of young minds on Feb. 5, as seventh grade students from the Gardner Pilot Academy (GPA) showcased “novel engineering projects.”The event, coordinated by Kathryn Hollar, Director of Community Engagement and Diversity Outreach at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, along with GPA faculty members, exposed middle school students to the engineering design process. The cross-disciplinary project also provided an opportunity for these young thinkers to be mentored by Harvard engineering concentrators. The impetus for the project was a new curricular unit based on Linda Sue Park’s novel “A Long Walk to Water,” explained seventh-grade teacher Katherine Atkins Pattinson. The book’s two main story lines support the Water for South Sudan Foundation. Salva Dut is a Sudanese “lost boy” in search of his family, and Nya, is a girl who walks hours on end each day to retrieve drinking water.“Students read these books that are so sad, but wonder ‘so then what?’ We decided to empower students to be the problem solvers, to aid in creation versus just applying skills,” Pattinson said. The seventh graders read “A Long Walk to Water” in the fall and, at the start of the new semester, had the chance to choose teams and pick a client from the novel. They came up with ideas to help Salva in his travels or Nya to have clean water. One group of students presented a water filtration system made with layers of charcoal, pebbles, and sand. During their presentation, they demonstrated the device by emptying a cup of dirty water into their system and pouring out clear water.“You think charcoal is going to mess up the water, but it takes the contaminates out. This could help Nya and her village not get sick from the lake water,” explained seventh-grader Alex Arevalo.Other novel ideas ranged from bug zappers to combat malaria, to many iterations on shoes made of recycled materials. One student group of girls constructed sandals made from used plastic water bottles, a group of boys, including Francisco Sosa, constructed a pair of sneakers from cardboard and foam that remarkably resembled Nike Jordans.“The girl in the story gets hurt by thorns in her feet. We wanted to make a thick sole and we thought the shoes should be waterproof,” Sosa said. When asked what he learned from the project, he responded, “It’s better working in a group than working alone.”Read more about the project and the students’ novel ideas at https://www.seas.harvard.edu/news/2018/02/novel-project Read Full Storylast_img read more

Launching an internal branding campaign

first_img 37SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr Branding is a complex initiative that involves two primary components – external branding and internal branding. External branding is the more well-known element and generally involves a company’s external image, reputation, logos and the like. Internal branding is often the overlooked side of branding but is essentially the most important. It involves a company’s culture and core values. It influences how employees perceive the organization, how they treat their customers or members and how they treat each other. Internal branding is the guts of the organization, and without it, the external brand will eventually fail.Internal branding serves many purposes. When done correctly, an internal brand campaign increases employee morale and helps them feel like they have a stake in the organization’s success. When that happens, employees are committed and will change their behaviors to align with the brand and its values. A successful internal branding campaign transitions your staff from employees to brand ambassadors. They don’t just work for your financial institution anymore. They live the brand and model what it represents.Launching an Internal brand campaign should always happen in conjunction with your external brand launch, but that’s not the only time an internal brand campaign benefits your organization. Sometimes the external brand is strong, but employee morale is declining. An internal brand campaign helps employees renew their commitment to your financial institution and its brand. This is especially true if you never did internal branding when you launched your external brand. An internal brand campaign is also effective when a new CEO takes the reigns. Toyota launched an internal brand campaign recently as part of its efforts to consolidate its four North American locations onto one large campus in Texas. The purpose of the campaign was to unify the company. continue reading »last_img read more

Mayo crush Donegal

first_img Cillian O’Connor helped himself to a hat-trick of goals as the westerners gained revenge for last year’s defeat in the decider, as they romped to a semi-final clash with Tyrone. Mayo stunned the Sam Maguire Cup holders with two goals inside the opening 13 minutes. Press Association First O’Connor rifled to the net, then centre back Donal Vaughan joined the attack to round off a flowing move with a close range finish. Mayo held a massive 12 points lead, 2-10 to 0-4, at half-time, and pushed on with two more O’Connor goals. Colm McFadden pulled back a consolation goal for Donegal with just a minute to play. Kerry set up an All-Ireland SFC semi-final clash with Dublin by defeating Cavan by 0-15 to 0-9 at Croke Park. But it was an unconvincing display by the Munster men, who struggled against the rank outsiders, who dominated the second half Kerry controlled the first period, leading by 0-11 to 0-2 at the break, with points from Colm Cooper (4)and Johnny Buckley (3). Cavan fought back with courage, and points from Niall McDermott and Eugene Keating narrowed the gap, but Kerry held on, despite scoring just four points in the second half, Cooper top-scoring with six. center_img Mayo overwhelmed defending champions Donegal by 4-17 to 1-10 in a remarkably one-sided All-Ireland SFC quarter-final at Croke Park.last_img read more

“Dragons“ would get at least nine Million Euros for the Placement at European Championship

first_imgThe Union of European Football Associations’s (UEFA) Executive Board will provide incredibly 371 million euros for national teams which will participate in the European Championship in 2020.That means that the 24 national teams which insure the placement at the European Championship will get close to 9 million euros, and for each win in the group stage, they can get an additional 1.5 million euros. UEFA will also reward those teams who have won one point, and they will receive 750.000 euros.Furthermore, if the national team insures placement in the quaver of the finals, it will receive an additional 2 million euros, while the placement in the quarter of the finals  secure another three million euros. Semi-final placement would grant another five million euros, and the final placement seven million euros. Therefore, it is clear why the placement at the European Championship should be imperative for the national football team of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and the new selector Robert Prosinecki, since the amount that they would receive for placement, approximately nine million euros, would significantly help in the improvement of BH football.(Source: klix.ba)last_img read more

Bilbao’s 38-year-old striker stuns Barcelona in title defence opener

first_imgDe Jong fully justified his place with a serene display, seamlessly linking midfield to attack and dictating tempo with a maturity well beyond his 22 years.By contrast, Griezmann never really settled after a nervous start, allowing a simple pass to slip under his foot before hacking late at the shin of Unai Lopez.Inaki Williams, meanwhile, fresh from signing a nine-year contract last week, started fast, as he saw a rasping shot pushed wide and then skipped in behind Nelson Semedo but was again denied by Ter Stegen.De Jong was tidy and composed but Barca were less controlled and their rhythm knocked further by Suarez departing shortly before half-time.He had been testing his calf moments before, just as a poor header back landed perfectly in his path. Suarez shot first time but struck the post.Raul Garcia failed to beat Ter Stegen from 10 yards while Rafinha, on for Suarez, went close, his curling effort brilliantly tipped onto the join between the post and crossbar by Unai Simon.Ernesto Valverde put Ivan Rakitic on for Carles Alena at half-time and Rafinha again hit the post, this time freed by a cute reverse pass from Ousmane Dembele.Bilbao seemed to tire and Barca turned the screw. Rakitic fired over as three Bilbao defenders leapt in front of him but their opponents survived.Carles Perez, the 21-year-old forward, came on for only his second league appearance but it was Bilbao’s substitute that proved decisive.A quick one-two down the right produced a looping cross into the box, where Aduriz did the rest.Share on: WhatsApp Athletic Bilbao’s Spanish forward Aritz Aduriz celebrates his goalMadrid, Spain | AFP |  Barcelona made a nightmare start to the defence of their La Liga title on Friday by losing Luis Suarez to injury and then losing 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao, after a sensational late volley from substitute Aritz Aduriz.Suarez hobbled off in the 37th minute with what looked like a calf injury before Aduriz came on in the 88th, the 38-year-old striker who has announced he will retire at the end of the season. This was a spectacular start to the finale as Aduriz threw himself into the air and acrobatically volleyed past Marc-Andre ter Stegen to send San Mames wild on La Liga’s opening night.“The competition has put us in our place,” said Gerard Pique afterwards. “We were not us.”Barca were already without Lionel Messi, who sustained a calf injury during pre-season, and before kick-off confirmed they were about to lose Philippe Coutinho, a loan deal “agreed in principle” with Bayern Munich, according to the club’s director Guillermo Amor.Suarez will undergo tests on Tuesday to diagnose the length of his absence but Messi’s return, and perhaps negotiations for Paris Saint-Germain striker Neymar, might assume added urgency during his absence.Antoine Griezmann will be expected to step up too but after joining from Atletico Madrid in July, he endured an underwhelming debut. Coutinho is evidence of the need for time to adjust.Bilbao, who finished eighth last season, held Barca to a goalless draw in February and they were good value for another point until Aduriz intervened. He has scored more than 200 goals in his 20-year career but perhaps none as memorable as this one. La Liga’s first of the season may even prove to be its best.– ‘Beautiful football’ –“Sometimes football can be so beautiful,” said Aduriz afterwards. “It will be impossible not to miss this but everything has a beginning and an end. I am incredibly grateful to be able to choose this ending.”For Barca, there was at least the consolation of an excellent performance from Frenkie de Jong, also making his debut in place of Sergio Busquets.last_img read more

Thurston County Solid Waste has resources to make your next event both fun and environmentally friendly.  So next time you have a BBQ or other family gathering, consider borrowing a free recycle kit from one of eight locations in our county. Most kits come with bins for recycling, food waste, trash plus bags and signs. They are easy to transport and assemble. And your guests will love having other options besides sending waste to the landfill. The best part is the kits are free and made available thanks to a state grant and partners’ help.New to the event recycling program this year, is a partnership with Celebrations, the party story in Lacey. Now you can get a recycling kit for FREE and rent reusable water pitchers, plates, cups, and silverware on the same trip! Renting durable and reusable party items will reduce the amount of trash and even recycling you might have to deal with. It’s the “reduce” part of “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” Plus, with changes at Silver Springs Organics, the organics collection program no longer allows your paper plates, cups, and biodegradable forks.  These items are now trash.   Just go to Celebrations’ rental catalog at www.CelebrationsStore.com and click on “Recycling Kit.”You have some options for the recyclables and organics you collect at your events. Leading With Discounts and Offending Your Customers

first_imgA game salesperson from a game sales organization would have replied to my offer to take the discount like this: “I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t know you were a customer. If you signed up last year, you got a way better deal than the one I am offering your neighbors. But you really have to see this new offering we have for you! You’re going to love it! Check this out!” The poor salesperson that rang my doorbell had a wonderful deal for me. He said, “I have my trucks in the area over the next few days, and if you sign up for service, I can do it for half price.” I told him that I would accept his deal for half off the regular price, but then added: “By the way, I am already signed up with you. Thanks!”Poor kid had no game, so I let him off the hook. I said, “No worries, kid. I’m busting your chops.” He was relieved and walked away as quickly as he could.Last week I received an email from another salesperson. He promised he could save 40% over whatever I am paying for Internet bandwidth and voice over IP services. I didn’t reply, but I should have. I’m already their customer, too. I’d happily take the 40% savings his email promised.Transactional sales organizations are funny. Why would you send your salespeople out into the world to sell without giving them a list of your existing clients? Why would you offer a new customer a deal that you wouldn’t offer your existing clients? Why would you treat strangers better than you treat the people who are already writing you a check? What do you want your existing customers to believe about your relationship? And why on Earth would you lead with a discount? The answer to these questions are many:Because you don’t intend to create value.Because you don’t know how to create value.Because you are transactional.Because you won’t train your salespeople.Because you don’t care about anything but the sale.last_img read more
